Responsibilities






Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Assesses the needs of patients and families through the interpretation of written medical director protocols and creating an appropriate patient care plan within their scope of practice.
  • Adapts and adjusts the patient’s care plan according to the patient’s needs in the prehospital setting and may serve as primary attendant of patient while on scene and/or during transportation.
  • Prepared to physically intervene in potentially violent situations to provide patient care in accordance to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Carries out high quality patient care while following the scope of practice set out by the State of Iowa Public Health Department Bureau of EMS and this ambulance service.
  • Ability to transport a patient or community member, in a safe manner through the utilization of an ambulance or secure car, potentially during adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to safety transport a patient by stretcher, stair-chair, and/or by vehicle (ambulance).
  • Represents the department at community events such as sporting event standbys, parades, and job fairs.
  • Ability to prepare reports and testify to their accuracy/events during criminal, civil, or regulatory investigation.

Ambulance Maintenance and Readiness

  • Documents daily, weekly, and monthly ambulance checks to ensure proper stock levels of equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares the ambulances by ensuring they are cleaned and in a state of readiness which includes appropriate decontamination when necessary.

In-facility duties

  • Performs hospital-based duties appropriate for individual’s level of EMS certification and assists registered nurses in ER and other patient care areas.

  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.Β  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Current Iowa certification as an EMT.

Basic Life Support Certification.

Valid Iowa driver’s license for at least three years with an acceptable or clear rating according to the Motor Vehicle Record chart. (see below).

Β·Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Must have a minimum of two years driving experience with no record of DUI, DWI, or similar alcohol or drug related offenses over the past five years.

Β·Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  No record of reckless driving, careless driving, speeding over 15 miles above the speed limit, fleeing or eluding a police officer, chemical test refusal, leaving the scene of an accident, driving after revocation or suspension, or passing a stopped school bus in the last five years.
