StartPlaying

  • We are on a mission to create communities through play. We call the hosts of these communities Game Masters AKA: GMs. We believe being a Game Master is the best gig economy job in the world!

  • We’re building what we know and ultimately want to use ourselves. (One of our founders is the OG Professional Game Master)

  • We’re all passionate gamers (tabletop, video games, whatever!) who want to spread the joy we’ve known for years.

  • Proudly Backed by A16Z & Y-Combinator

Our Core Values

  • Growth Mindset: We strive constantly for improvement.

  • Collaboration: We pull in collaborators to nurture and riff on ideas.

  • Passionate: We are deeply committed to our mission and our craft.

  • Relentlessly Resourceful: We are never daunted by problems and relentlessly solve them.

Role

  • Take ownership of design projects from concept to completion: You will work to understand and define our users' problems. You will craft design solutions from early ideation and prototyping to polished high-fidelity mockups and final production-ready assets. Embrace a fast-paced environment where rapid iteration through feedback is mission-critical.

  • Contribute to and maintain a scalable design system: Collaborate with engineers and design to evolve our component library, ensuring a consistent user experience across our platform while allowing for flexibility in design iterations.

  • Conduct thorough user and market research: Lead user research sessions, run competitive analyses, and gather data to generate insights that inform design decisions. You’ll advocate for our users' needs in every design choice across all disciplines.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams: Work alongside leadership, product, engineering, and customer teams to create cross-disciplinary informed solutions. You’ll be actively involved in prioritizing features and delivering high-impact solutions.

  • Contribute to a positive design culture: Participate in design critiques, share insights, and mentor less experienced team members to help foster a collaborative and interdisciplinary design-informed team culture.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience in UX/UI design, preferably within a startup environment.

  • Proficiency with all Figma products. (Designing / Prototyping / Figjam / Organizing)

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and improve design systems.

  • Strong research skills: experience with user studies, data analytics, and market analysis.

  • Proven experience collaborating closely with engineering teams to implement responsive, pixel-perfect UIs.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively articulate design challenges and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to balance creative vision with business and user needs.

What is it like working at StartPlaying?

  • We're a fully remote company. We care less about "work signaling" and more about tangible output.

  • We try not to take ourselves too seriously. Our Slack and Discord are filled with frequent memes, gifs, and music posts.

  • We critique each other's work, give constructive feedback, and intently listen when others speak.

  • We love adding easter eggs to the site or internal documentation.

  • If you have ideas on making the company better, we want to hear them.
