The Direct Machine Learing (ML) Platform Team in the Core OS organization places Microsoft's best innovations in machine learning and AI in the hands of millions of Windows developers worldwide. The DirectML Team is responsible for driving platform innovations for machine learning across various hardware architectures at the scale of the Windows ecosystem. Our platform, built on the DirectML core operating system stack, helps power countless machine learning workloads from computer visions, audio and video to the latest generative AI models such as the many generative art and large language models. Our mission is to realize the AI PC vision for Windows and make Windows an AI-first computing platform for developers by delivering breakthrough technology that helps drive Microsoft's leadership in AI for years to come. We are a learn-it-all team with passion and specialty in designing high-performance platforms that leverage cutting-edge hardware capabilities ranging from optimized GPU compute kernels to dedicated AI processor architectures on the Neural Processing Unit (NPU.) We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer  with a desire to learn and be immersed in this fundamental platform shift that AI brings to the world by helping the team to build highly efficient execution engines and tools in a fast-moving but highly collaborative environment.   • Work and collaborate with engineers from the GPU and NPU hardware vendors to build and maintain the future and existing features of the DirectML platform stack on various compute devices.
  • Develop and maintain highly reliable and scalable performance benchmark systems that run across diverse compute devices.
  • Maintain and extend the hardware conformance suite to ensure that the DirectML platform and related technologies continue to reliably produce accurate and consistent result across diverse supported compute devices.
  • Monitor daily builds of the platform and keep the automated monitoring system in reliable state.
  • Work with open-source engineers to help facilitate related work such as tools and frameworks in the open-source community.

Embody our Culture and Values



 

 

· Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience delivering commercial-quality software products for consumers or enterprises.
  •  4+ years of C/C++ coding and low-level debugging experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience in developing machine learning compilers or kernels is highly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in training or fine-tuning language models is a big plus.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of GPU compute architecture and experience writing high-performance compute shaders for machine learning operations in any language is a plus.
  • The ideal candidate has good communication and customer interfacing skills, ability to deal with ambiguity, and ability to prioritize software development tasks and a proven record of customer successes.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
