Director of Underwriting

Position Overview

With support from the Vice President of Underwriting and Director of Underwriting Operations, this role will manage the creation, updating and implementation of underwriting guidelines and underwriting training and staff development tools. In collaboration with senior management, the role will assist in the creation of underwriting strategy and regular review of the business’ suite of products.

Key Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the VP of Underwriting and Director of Underwriting Operations, own the creation, updating, and implementation of Public Risk Group’s underwriting rules/guidelines library.

  • In collaboration with the Claims and Compliance department, regularly review and update the Public Risk Group’s suite of products.

  • Key participant in the Public Risk Group underwriting onboarding and training program for both new and experienced hires.

  • Assist Compliance in the implementation of any necessary form, rule, rate, surcharge, or tax, changes.

  • Perform scheduled quality control inspections on underwriters’ books of business to ensure adherence to business underwriting guidelines, compliance controls, and company best practices.Β 

  • Collaborate with VP of Underwriting, Director of UW Operations and IT staff to identify, implement, and validate system pilots and tools.

  • Assist VP of Underwriting in monitoring and analyzing underwriting production metrics including but not limited to loss experience, agency performance, identifying trends and analyzing competitive marketing data.

  • Cultivate relationships with internal and external contacts to facilitate the underwriting process, promote business development, and to remain abreast of industry trends.

  • Foster superior agency relationships through outstanding customer service, by clearly communicating UW appetite, by routinely sharing performance metrics, and by keeping agency partners apprised of industry trends.Β Β 

  • Collaborate closely with other functional areas of Business Development, Risk Control, Claims and IT to accomplish goals and projects that will help build and maintain a profitable book of business.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant and progressive Underwriting experience in related area that includes a strong working knowledge of state laws.

  • Public Entity experience a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance and Risk Management, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or the equivalent education and/or experience.

  • Possession of any of the following is required: Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) or equivalent insurance designation depending on specialty area.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy

  • Superior organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates, and technical developments related to applicable area of the Company’s business to proactively respond to changing business environment

  • Advanced proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)

Travel Expectations: Travel up to 15%
